Other Characters: Pagan Min, Godric
Character Name: Jake Lonergan
Series: Cowboys and Aliens
Age: 37
From When?: Just after he's captured in the final battle
Inmate/Warden: Warden. Jake is a rough and tumble cowboy with amnesia, but he instinctively does what’s right when he needs to. He might be a loner, but he rushes in to save his friends when he can. He’s not really the nurturing type and it will take him a bit to settle into the warden role, but he does have some good incentive to help someone else. He has experience with being the stereotypical bad guy, but he’s since seen a different way and isn’t locked into the life like he used to be.
Item: A Bible
Arrival: N/A
Abilities/Powers: Jake is just a pretty typical human cowboy. He has no real super powers, but years of being in and leading a gang of bandits has given him very good fighting abilities and increased pain tolerance. He’s also a good rider and can really hold his whiskey. I'd like for him to be able to come with the alien gauntlet. It doesn't turn on unless the aliens are around or if he's in danger, and he also doesn't know how to take it off.
Personality:Jake has learned to be tough and silent about his life. As a bandit, wanted throughout the territories, he has learned that silence is oftentimes his best weapon. He is an observer, quietly watching others for any indication of weakness or strength, hoping to find something that he can latch onto. He’s not a particularly good liar because he doesn’t really like to do it, so he prefers to not say anything if he can help it. This does mean that he can come off cold and unfeeling, when, in reality, he just knows better than to show that emotion. It’s typical for the cowboy breed to be unflinching and stoic, and Jake takes it to an entirely new level.
He doesn’t particularly like people all that much either. Generally, he would prefer to be left alone, unless he forms an attachment with a person. Jake knows better than to trust others quickly, even if they wish to help. His reactions to people are really based on how they treat him. If they are receptive and civil, he will react in kind. If they are threatening, then he has absolutely no patience for them and will usually resort to violence to shut them up. Though, really, he reacts violently to most situations, choosing to shoot or hit first and then walk away. No questions involved. He’s not really one for investigating.
Jake speaks the language of the Western. Which means…not really speaking at all. He communicates through actions more than he does words and he prefers one or two word phrases to actual long conversations. He’s gruff in his language when he does speak and requires at least a few shots of whiskey before having any sort of real discussion with anyone. Even then, it’s hit or miss. He’s not talkative in the best of circumstances, but always finds ways to get his point across and interact with others. He does have a dry sense of humor, though he usually peppers his conversations with sarcasm more often than not.
It’s very obvious that he’s been educated in more places than just on the path of the outlaw. He doesn’t really show it in his words, but he also doesn’t always use the same casual slang of his fellow cowboys. From this, it can be assumed that he is from back East or the people who raised him were. But he was then drawn to the West by promises of riches and gold, making him a Western man at heart.
The preacher in the town remarks once that “I’ve seen good men do bad things and I’ve seen bad men do good things.” Jake is really the former. His love for violence is just a way that he deals with the chaos in his life, as well as a desensitized view of the world around him. Bloodshed is the way that he’s always known how to solve problems, so it’s the way he will continue to solve them. That “good man” in him does show in important ways, like when he stayed just to say a few words for the preacher’s death, or when he marched miles across the desert to try and save Ella.
He does have a short fuse, which often gets the better of him, even with people who mean him no harm. He loses his temper with his wife when she disapproves of his theft. He yanks Ella off of her horse and pins her to the ground when he thought she was following him. He’s quiet with his anger and disapproval until the moment he snaps.
However, he is fiercely protective of the people he cares about in his life. Though he might get angry with them, he will go through incredible lengths to protect them. He jumps on top of a flying alien spacecraft to save Ella and he treks through the desert with strangers to save Alice. He may still get angry and yell at them, but he won’t let any harm come to them.
Jake is also a very determined man, pursuing his own interests, usually at the expense of better options or other people. He refused Ella’s help in favor of stubbornly going after his own goals. It was only when his goals aligned with Dolarhyde’s that he rejoined their crew to help and began to actually care about them.
Barge Reactions: Jake isn’t going to be happy about being on the Barge with people he doesn’t know or understand. He’s especially not going to be happy if he hears about aliens. Still, he’s been through a lot in his life and, with the amnesia, he’s learned to take things as they come.
Path to Redemption: N/A
Deal: Getting rid of the aliens
History: (The first three paragraphs are mine. The rest is taken from Wikipedia with a little editing.)
Jake Lonergan was an outlaw. One of the worst in the territories. He and his gang robbed coaches, stole from people, caused mayhem, fires and just brought out a sense of fear everywhere they went. However, Jake soon fell for a prostitute named Alice and quit his gang, though he never really could leave that life behind. They lived on a small farm away from any cities or towns and hoped to make a nice life for themselves. However, because they had both lived outside the law for so long, they couldn’t really pull themselves up.
That’s when Jake decided to steal a great sum of gold from Dolarhyde, a nearby cattle rancher who basically owned the town of Absolution. Jake proudly displayed their new riches to Alice, who was less than pleased about them. She condemned him for it, but, before they got a chance to really settle it, the gold disappeared into the roof, a hole was blown through the ceiling, and both Alice and Jake were kidnapped. The aliens strapped them down for their bizarre experiments and Jake watched his wife die from them. When he had his chance, he was able to get free, escaping with a piece of their technology.
He woke up just west of Absolution with no memory of who he was or where he had come from. He certainly didn’t know what had happened to him.
After killing three drifters who try to rob him, he takes their clothes, weapons and a horse. He wanders into the small town of Absolution, where the local preacher, Meacham, treats his wound. After he subdues Percy Dolarhyde, a volatile drunk who has been terrorizing the town, Sheriff Taggart recognizes him as Jake Lonergan, a wanted outlaw, and attempts to arrest him. Jake beats up the posse sent to take him in and nearly escapes, but a mysterious woman named Ella knocks him out.
Percy's father, Colonel Woodrow Dolarhyde, a wealthy and ruthless cattleman, arrives with his men and demands that Percy be released. He sees Jake and also demands he be released to him, since Jake was the one who stole Dolarhyde's gold. During the standoff, alien craft begin attacking the town. Percy, the sheriff and many other townsfolk are grabbed by long, whip-like feelers hanging from the bottom of the alien ships and are abducted. Jake's shackle unfolds and becomes a weapon, shooting down one of the ships with a single shot, ending the attack.
Dolarhyde, Ella, and other townsfolk form a posse to track an injured alien that escaped from the downed ship. Jake, meanwhile, travels to an abandoned cabin, and in a flashback, recalls returning there with the gold just before he and Alice were abducted by the aliens. His memories returning, Jake joins up with the posse. During the night, while they camp in an upside down paddlewheel steamboat, the alien they were tracking kills Meacham, who sacrifices himself to save Emmett, Taggart's grandson.
By the next morning, most of the posse has deserted, and the others are attacked by Jake's former gang. Jake, who stole the gang's loot after their last heist, attempts to retake control, but fails. As he and the others flee, the aliens begin attacking again and Ella is captured. Jake jumps aboard the ship and attacks the alien pilot, causing the ship to crash, but Ella is fatally wounded.
Chiricahua Apaches capture the posse, blaming them for the alien attacks. As Ella's body is dumped on a fire, she is fully resurrected. Ella reveals herself to be an alien who traveled to Earth to help resist the invaders after they destroyed her homeworld. The aliens, who have been abducting humans to perform experiments, are also mining gold to power their machines. They are not invulnerable, however: Jake's gauntlet weapon can kill them, as well as stabbing and shooting them, though the creatures are far stronger and more durable than humans and have superior weapons. Ella claims Jake holds the secret to the aliens' whereabouts and says they must stop them before they exterminate all life on the planet. After taking medicine offered by the Apaches, Jake recalls that Alice was euthanized after she was used in an alien experiment, but he escaped, inadvertently stealing the alien weapon in the form of a gauntlet. He could also remember the location of the aliens' base of operations.
Armed with this knowledge, the group, now led by Dolarhyde, prepares to attack the aliens' grounded mothership. Jake returns to his old gang and persuades them to join the fight. In a sneak attack, the humans breach the spaceship, forcing the aliens into a ground battle. Jake and Ella board the ship and free the captives, but Jake is captured. This is where he joins the Admiral.
